Chapter Six

Ally was so upset, she angry-cleaned the entire house.

She scrubbed the grout in both the kitchen and bathroom tiles. She weeded all the flowerbeds in front of the house. She pulled out the vacuum with all its extension hoses and vacuumed every single floor, including the stairs and the corners, the grates and air ducts, and even on top of the ceiling fans.

Halfway through cleaning the garage, she finally just broke down and cried. She was overreacting, and she knew it. She just needed to stop making herself crazy. Wiping her eyes and blowing her nose, she decided to pretend nothing was wrong.

Ray was down seven pounds on the scale the following Monday. A week after that, he was down three more. He was still running. Every morning she woke up to find his side of the bed empty and cold, and she was starting to get really good at making low-calorie lunches.

The problem was, for every snack baggy of celery and carrot sticks that she packed for him, she found herself eating anything and everything else—M&Ms, chips, ice cream, cookies. She couldn’t seem to make herself stop. The more weight he lost, the harder she had to pretend she didn’t know it was because he was, either consciously or subconsciously, striving to replace her. The more upset she got, the more she discovered she had a terrible habit of turning to baking to cheer herself up.

She made three different batches of cookies that first week alone. And then, because she didn’t want him to think she was trying to sabotage his efforts, she ate them all and hid the evidence.

She made brownies the next week, and a chocolate peanut butter pie with mile-high whipped cream on top. She ate both of those too and then cried for two hours straight when, after stepping on the scale for the first time since her pregnancy with Laylah, the numbers betrayed her sudden shift to very poor eating habits.

She couldn’t keep doing this. Ray was eating right and exercising, and she was blowing up like a circus balloon.

She was a horrible wife, one who hit all-new lows when in week four her husband lost four more pounds, she gained seven, and the first of three cleaning ladies showed up to interview for the position of part-time maid. To help her, Ray had said. But the moment she opened the door to find the first twenty-something, buxom blonde currently working her way through college by cleaning houses, she lost it.

“Sorry, the position’s been filled,” she barely got out before slamming the door.

“Wrong address,” she told the next one to show up.

The third lady was at least as old as she was, plump and pleasant looking with a huge smile and crooked front teeth, and Ally still lied, “We’ve hired someone, sorry,” and shut the door on her.

At lunch time, when her husband called to ask how the interviews were going, with a cheerfulness that made her face and her heart hurt, she said, “Really good, although I don’t think these ones are quite right for us.
